Caring Cat Cafe

We received the nicest scrapbook from Cafe Nyanny, where our Hinata and Naruto (Now Kota and Waka) went last year (See the entire book here!). The cat cafe recently held a charity event to encourage donations towards these two cats’ “hometown” and were able to raise ¥57,930! Thanks very much to the staff at Cafe Nyanny and their visitors, for their generous donations. The money will go towards the cost of care for kittens in much the same situation as Hinata and Naruto were in last year. Found in a park, these kittens would previously have been destined for destruction or a traumatic death in the surrounding area. JCN, with the help of local volunteers, is able to help start TNR projects in these areas and accept kittens found there, to re-home from our shelter. All healthy kittens rescued on TNR projects last year were re-homed, and we need your help to have an equally successful record this year. Please do what you can to promote and support adoption! Every kitten adopted through JCN supports population control and a step closer to a future of no more homeless cats.

Summer Lovin’

The kitties are all making the best of these hot days by sprawling and snuggling on the cool concrete! 8 went out to new placements last week, and we are planning another trip to Tokyo for the 28th and 29th. This is a great time to get your applications for adoption in, so that we might be able to process them in time for the next trip out with kittens. A casual volunteer meeting is planned in Tokyo, for August 29th, so contact us for details if you are interested in stopping by for that.

Join us in Kansai for our Summer Barbecue Fiesta this SUNDAY (very sorry for the previous mistake), August 9! Fajitas, Spanish rice, nachos, and quesadillas will be on the menu, not to mention some interesting cold drinks. Donations of ¥3,000 for adults, or ¥1,500 for children will go towards shelter care costs. The party will be held at the beach, but we’ll provide shuttle service from JR Inae station. For more details and to reserve a place, please contact us A.S.A.P.

When we’re hot…We’re hot!

Lots of great things happening for JCN over the past few months! First, our rescued kittens continue to go out to new homes. If you have been waiting for a break to welcome a new kitty into your life, summer might be just the chance, so check out some of the cuties waiting for you to give them a home. We were in the June edition of Cat Fancy Magazine. If you missed getting a copy, check it out here. We’ve received some very kind offers of volunteer help. We’ll be meeting with new volunteers this summer both in Kansai and in Tokyo, so this is a great time to send in your volunteer applications. We’ve been encouraged to see many people who’ve contacted us, making their own efforts and being successful at kitten rescue/re-homing. Look for our article about kitten rescue included in ARK’s next newsletter. And, we’ve formed a partnership with our local and regional animal control centers to help lower the number of cats destroyed, through TNR assistance and re-homing. We have already gotten started saving kittens that would have otherwise been destroyed, and going out to trap/spay moms. These are exciting days, as we see a positive shift in attitudes about animal welfare here in Japan. Join us as we get the ball rolling towards a happier future for cats in communities across this country! Please check out the latest newsletter to catch up on our recent work…

Kitten Central!

We want to let everyone know that some of the JCN volunteers are forming their own independent welfare group in Tokyo called Save the Kitty! The walk-a-thon originally scheduled for JCN was canceled due to bad weather. The walk-a-thon happening on June 14 will now be held entirely in support of the new Save the Kitty group. All funds from the walk-a-thon and other Save the Kitty events do not go to JCN, but go to Save the Kitty, to be used towards their rehoming efforts in Tokyo. We hope that this doesn’t cause any confusion–those wishing to support JCN should contact us directly. We are happy that there will now be one more group working to help Japan’s stray and abandoned cats, and wish them the best of luck, as they get started on this important venture. Please check out our Tokyo page to see what kind of help we need for reorganizing the JCN group in Tokyo!

We’ve rescued 29 kittens this spring, and we’re looking for a few more hands to help with kitten care, particularly in Tokyo. If you are able to provide short term foster care for kittens headed to new homes, please let us know! We also need transportation for kittens, from the Kansai shelter, by Shinkansen. If you will be headed out this way sometime in the near future, and don’t mind bringing a carrier back with you, that would be helpful as well. Fill out our volunteer application, and let us know what you are up or not up for!
