Great news…First, Ewok has found her good home. Anne-Marie from Tokyo came out and chose her (after a difficult consideration over Rose and Miiko, as well). Ewok warmed to her right away, purring and snuggling in her arms, which was a good sign from our sometimes timid Ewok. They made the trip back together on the Shinkansen, with little problems. Ewok is safely hiding under Anne-Marie’s bed, as we might have expected. Looking forward to pictures and word of her settling, over the next few days!

Second, two of the Josie and the Pussy cat group, that came from animal control, have gone to stay in foster care in Osaka. They are having a fantastic time, and can now be seen on Youtube!

Third, the people with the 7 (not 6!) kittens with stray mother cat in the garage, turned out to be very willing to do the job of socializing the kittens in preparation for new homes. So the gang will stay there, moving into one of our cages, and mom will go for her spay operation this Friday.

And then the not so great news…More kitten emergencies. Maple was fine this morning, though still having stubborn diarrhea. By this afternoon he had become lethargic and had stopped eating. We had scheduled a spay/neuter operation, and when the volunteer came to pick up the cat, David had to bring Maple along to see the vet, too. At one point Maple became critical, but the vet was able to revive him by starting an IV and injecting something into his vein (so amazingly tiny, he wasn’t sure that he could do it). I came home from classes and noticed that one of the other kittens looked feverish–walking unsteadily and not eating. So at 10:00pm, I called Takako and rushed to join David at the vet with yet another sick kitten. By now the vet was doing the spay, and Maple was in an incubator. The vet’s other incubator has the other 2 kittens from the Josie and Pussycat group, that came in with herpes virus, and have not been able to get over it yet. There is another cat in the vet’s recovery area, still recovering from being hit by a car, and brought in by one of our volunteers. The kitten that I brought–one of Mii-chan’s, and yet to find a name–did indeed have an elevated temperature. The vet gave it a drip and medicine after he finished the spay, but couldn’t keep that kitten there because he didn’t have space. So we’ve borrowed his gentle radiator heater to set up in the kitten room to warm it up, and will try caring for this one here ourselves tonight. Maple stayed at the vet with his little IV taped to his front paw. By the time we left, he was sitting up and eating, which goes to show just how good our vet is! Poor little Maple, still dripping diarrhea, but back from the brink for now. We didn’t make it back to the shelter until midnight, and then had to get returnees settled. Left for classes at 9:00am this morning, back for an hour in the afternoon to help with Ewok’s adoption, then back to classes until I went to the vet tonight. Back up for classes again tomorrow morning, and David will probably be biking to the vet. As usual with kitten season, the kittens won’t be the only ones needing IVs, if we keep up this pace. More pictures from our marathon vet visit…

    Oh the poor kitties!

First off, let me say that a similar situation happened to someone I knew through a friend in Philadelphia. He found a kitten outside that was separated for a couple of days from momma and siblings. When the kitten was finally rescued, she was fine initially and then collapsed. The kitten was rushed to the vet for a glucose drip IV and then was almost immediately fine afterwards. She went on to be a healthy and happy cat. So I am praying that Maple has the same luck!

And thank God that poor injured kitty is at the vets….Boy your vet must really love your business! :)

Second, may I suggest lots of vitamins and good food and lots of healthy drinks like juice, water and tea? A little caffeine is good too but try to rest a little even if you both have to take turns…. You are both real heroes!

I am so happy that Ewok, one of my favorites, has been adopted. She had such a rough start in life and she deserves nothing but love and comfort for the rest of her long life.

I didn’t realize that you now have a paypal account. I wanted to donate earlier but wasn’t sure about the bank transferring funds procedure. The Cat Fancy article was great and I hope it brings lots of donations, volunteers, and adoptions.

Tired this morning, as I get started, but also incredibly encouraged!! You’ve no idea how much the support and kind words mean–it makes all the difference. It will be what gets me through my day–I hope that my students are equally understanding if their teacher starts nodding off mid sentence!

Mii-chan’s little one (have GOT to name her, but my brain is not extending too far creatively these days), is alert this morning–a good sign. We separated her from her group, for safety, but gave her a hot water bottle as well as the vet’s radiator. It doesn’t feel at all cold to us (hot in the daytime, actually), but the vet said that the kittens have trouble regulating their temperatures, and can respond dramatically to slight changes. So he’s recommending that we low-heat the room during the night, when the temperature dips slightly. No word from the vet this morning, so I’m really hoping that no news is good news! I’ve got to run out to class, but David is here in the morning holding down the fort–we’ll switch in the afternoon, when he goes to classes and I take watch. Hopefully there will be a lull in the action at some point, and I can get a nap.

Ewok leaving for her new home should have been the biggest news of the day, and I’m looking forward to when I have the time to just enjoy that! I had my fingers crossed, to be honest, when Anne-Marie was choosing. This is one of those really good homes, and though of course I want that for them all, I so wanted that for little Ewok. Anne-Marie plans to post her regular updates on Facebook, so I’ll be sure to share those with everyone.

    Hello!
Here’s some news about Ewok. She is finding a little more courage to leave the bedroom but still goes hide under the bed or couch if she hears a strange noise but it’s getting better.
She loves to sit on my lap while I work and we sleep arms in arms all night long. She is a great cuttler.
I think her new name is now “Filou”. In French it means little kid doing little pranks but it in very sweet way. So she is my little Filou!

Amcorbei, thank you for the update on precious little Filou. She is one of my favorites and I am thrilled that she now has a loving home. Please continue to update and share photos of her. Remember there can never be too many updates or photos.
