Today was the day for Maggie and her little herbs to part ways. Maggie goes to be spayed and then released back to the herb garden. Her little ones will get ready for adoptive homes. The timing was a little forced, since the monthly low cost spay neuter clinic is open only this weekend. I would have preferred to wait a little longer for the two recently sick kittens to recover. Still, the kittens got sick from having to share a litter box with their mother, who arrived with 5 different parasites. Her recovery has been less than satisfactory, complicated by the stress of captivity and changing her diet from irregular kitchen scraps to everyday cat food. We’re thinking that the kittens will have a better chance of clearing the coccidium, now that they have the cage to themselves. I have to say I felt really bad pulling her away from her kittens and putting her in the carrier–she was not at all pleased. They were a very happy family–she snuggled and cleaned them constantly. Hopefully the kittens will become a little more attached to humans now, since this gives them their best chance for adoption. They have the advantage of all being very cute, so maybe people can overlook the shyness. Will try to give them a little extra attention tonight, and a soft blanket.
