4 new kittens came in this afternoon, so we took them to the vet to be checked, and they’re spending the night at the clinic. They came in from a situation involving a neighborhood with too many strays, so we’ll be going out there to check that out this week. This brings our kitten count up to 16. Trying not to panic, as it’s more than last year. But, that’s to be expected, since we’ve raised our profile locally. We’re continuing to build a better support network in Tokyo, and should be better able to rehome more kittens this year. The more concerning issue is funding for medical costs and kitten food. Luckily we have a little extra teaching work these days, so that should help. The first four to come in are the strongest and are eating solid food very well, but all the others are still drinking milk. We had hoped to separate 4 kittens from their feral mother today, as she is very unhappy about staying in the shelter, but the vet thinks the kittens are too young yet. We decided to put off the mother’s spay and release until the 18th. Going out first thing in the morning to check up on a mother and kittens found in a shed and then to the vet to pick up today’s new kittens. Hopefully the vet will get them drinking well from the bottle, while they are there. Will probably end up taking the mom and kittens from the shed tomorrow, as well, so we’ll be feral mother central for a while! More pics of the new group…
Another beautiful group of kittens! I just love tiny kitten ears!
Would any kittens be accepted by the folks that adopt out cats on the base? That would sure help out your adoption volume and be able to save more kitties!
Yes, they’ve offered to take kittens, and they have experienced orphan care volunteers! The difficult part is getting the kittens to Tokyo, as it costs over $200 round trip for one of us to take the train. Flying the kittens out by themselves would be a little cheaper, if we were only sending one or two carriers (we couldn’t fly the really young ones). We’re planning to make a trip soon, and will probably bring 4 carriers with 4 kittens in each!
